motorcycles get a lot of bad press for their environmental footprint. that’s why, when dutch designer ritsert mans has teamed up with scientist peter mooji, the duo wanted to create a ride that both looked and drove in a way that was harmonious with nature. their unconventional wooden motorbike gets all its power naturally—from algae oil—a fuel source that’s long been of interest to peter mooji.

‘peter developed a method for growing algae in a natural way, in salt water,’ explains ritsert mans. in order to demonstrate the power of this little-known fuel source, mans decided to create a bike powered by the stuff and designed in a way that was equally environmentally friendly. the idea behind the algae power and the design of the bike are underpinned by the same philosophy that the power of nature should be harnessed without being invaded or manipulated.

 

 

‘for every part of the bike, I looked to what nature could provide me with,’ explains mans, who built the frame and springs with wood, using cork for the for the dampeners, and hemp for reinforcement. ‘even though the single-sided swingarm seems to a big contrast with the “prehistoric” material it is made of, it’s actually a full composite, with all sorts of directional fibers provided by nature.’

 

 

when it comes to the design process, mans’ organic approach still pervades. although he was educated as a designer, the wholistic bike-builder expains coyly that he does not even have a working computer, besides his smartphone. ‘5 years ago, I decided that for me, designing meant following my intuition,’ he elaborates, ‘instead of simulating my way through the design process.’

 

 

the idea underpinning the project was to showcase how algae oil could be potentially used in the future. ‘people don’t know what the world will look like in 30 years from now in terms of transportation and energy,’ mans continues. ‘but that uncertainty allows people to develop and build there own ideas.’ the duo have also written a book on the idea of algae as a natural power source, titled ‘die dikke alg’ meaning ‘the thick algae’ in english.

Dutch Duo Builds Algae-Powered Wooden Motorcycle

Two young men from Netherlands have built a motorcycle made of wood, and it’s powered by an engine that runs on algae oil. Designer Ritsert Mans and scientist Peter Mooji started the development of the motorcycle as a project, to accompany Mooji’s new book, titled “De Dikke Alg” or “The Thick Algae”, which examines how algae could be used as fuel in a sustainable future. Mans developed the motorcycle while Mooji grew algae and harvested it for fuel. The chassis of the motorcycle is made of wood, as is the single-sided front end. Mans took out the motorcycle for its first test run on a beach.

This is not the first time algae oil has been used to fuel a motorcycle. In 2012, Scripps Institution of Oceanography alumnus Kristian Gustavson and team member Devin Chatterjie established the fastest (and only known) algae-fuelled motorcycle speed records at The Texas Mile land speed event in Beeville, Texas. Gustavson reached 94.6 mph (over 152 kmph) using a 50-50 blend of biodiesel derived from algae and cooking oil waste. Team member Chatterjie reached 96.2 mph (154 kmph) on 100 per cent algae-derived Green Crude diesel fuel supplied by Sapphire Energy Inc., one of the world’s leaders in algae-based oil crude production.

What makes algae appealing as an alternative “green” fuel is that algae can be grown in salt water. And what also makes algae ideal is that it can be grown in non-arable land. While algae does burn carbon dioxide like fossil fuels, it also requires carbon dioxide to photosynthesise, making it carbon neutral. But currently, the development of algae oil is in a nascent stage, and it’s three times as expensive as petroleum.

Can bacteria save lake bogged down by algae?

The two-acre lake at the center of Yardley Borough is the source of Nick Primola’s favorite childhood memories. That’s where he and his friends splashed one another from canoes and went exploring, where they skipped rocks on the water and fed the ducks, where they competed for fishing bragging rights. 


So when Primola, 47, moved back to Yardley with his family five years ago, he was dismayed to find Lake Afton uninviting for canoeing or splashing. It was so covered with algae, it “looked like you could walk across it.”

For three centuries, the lake has drawn nature lovers and strollers in the summer and ice skaters in winter. But in the last decade, muck has accumulated at the bottom and the water has become increasingly choked by algae, a problem inadvertently made worse after a 2012 street improvement project. Now, however, local preservationists say the tide is turning.

Last weekend, about 30 residents gathered to clean the area, sprucing it up for the warm-weather season. 

They weeded and trimmed, picked up trash, and planted shrubs. And in June, the next fix will be added: an all-natural black dye that will act as “sunglasses” for the lake, shielding it from the sun, whose warmth encourages the growth of algae in the increasingly shallow water.

Friends of Lake Afton, a group that works to maintain the privately owned lake, is hoping such natural remedies work.

Every two weeks, the lake is treated with bacteria and enzymes, which will continue through the summer, said Michelle Sharer, president of Friends of Lake Afton. The group hired Clean-Flo, a West Chester company specializing in biological water restoration, last year; now the treatments are ramping up.

“In the long run, it will take longer maybe than using chemicals, but it’s better for the environment, better for everything that lives out there,” said Sharer, who with her husband became owners of part of the lake when they bought an adjacent house in 2008.

Neither Sharer nor Primola, the group’s vice president, expected to become so passionate about the water when they each moved to Yardley — “We’ve basically been turned into marine botanists,” Primola quipped — but they were lured by tradition, need, and natural beauty.

The lake was originally created for a grist mill at the start of the 18th century, and in the mid-20th century, half of it was filled in to create more parking for the borough. It has long been a “gem” in the center of town, attracting the public for all kinds of recreation.

More recently, Lake Afton has been attracting public interest because it began looking so swamplike, said Dave Bowker, a board member for the group.

“The key now is to turn that into improvements, quickly,” he said.

The lake has not been dredged in decades, so sediment has accumulated at the bottom, cutting the depth nearly in half, Sharer said. The shallower the water, the more quickly it warms, and that’s a boon to the algae. Left unchecked, the lake would eventually become a swamp.

The algae thrives on phosphorus, which has been found in the water in tests and comes from the dam that sources Lake Afton, Sharer said. The group also believes that increased runoff from nearby homes draining into the lake — a result of the 2012 improvement project on Afton Avenue — has contributed to the growth: Common lawn treatments include phosphorus.

Because the lake remains privately owned by multiple parties, funding to remedy these woes presents an unusual challenge. “We can’t expend borough money on the lake … since it’s a private lake,” said borough manager John Boyle.

If it were a public body, officials would be able to apply for grants or other funding for the upkeep. The possibility of leasing the lake to the borough has been discussed but hasn’t come to fruition, Boyle said. Sharer is now looking into a conservation easement to open more funding opportunities.

Dredging would be the quickest remedy, but that can cost $500,000 to $750,000, Sharer said. So instead, they have turned to the cheaper natural treatments. 

The group raised $10,000 for new aerators last year, which made a small difference but cannot fix the problem alone. This year, the group needs $15,000 to $20,000 for the treatments and regular maintenance, Sharer said.

A fund-raiser was held at a local business last week, and another is scheduled for next month, along with activities on Yardley’s 50th Harvest Day, an annual festival, in September.

But already, Bowker said, the lake should begin seeing less algae this year, although major improvements will take time.

“We’re definitely probably in the best place we’ve been I can ever remember for potential improvements,” Bowker said. “We’re on the cusp of, I think, a lot of good things.”

For Primola, the efforts to restore the lake are about paying it forward to his kids’ generation. He’d like to be able to hold canoeing and paddleboating, cocktail hours, and, of course, fishing contests.

“To have something like that that you’re not really fully able to use and appreciate is kind of frustrating, knowing, as I know and many others do, what it once was,” he said. “Many kids have no idea the simple joy they could get out of that.”

And they’re also marketed quite differently; while they both have a granola, New Age-y vibe, Vitamineral Green uses a lot more unusual terms, like claiming the product can enhance your “vibrational energies.”

It makes sense to compare the two. What we found was a little surprising.

The taste is similar, but Perfect Food doesn’t contain sea vegetables and it’s just a tiny bit sweeter and nuttier, probably because it contains more fruit and sprouts than Vitamineral Green.

It does have a lot of ingredients that will appeal to New Agey types, and that may be enough for them. But we think if a product claims to contain a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals, it should include the vitamin and mineral content on the label.

Perfect Food isn’t perfect; it doesn’t mention its antioxidant content either, despite the fact that almost half of the product’s content by weight is an “antioxidant blend.”

That said, it has a more expansive nutrition panel: there’s 40 percent of the recommended daily intake of Vitamin C, 110 percent of your daily Vitamin K, 20 percent of your manganese, the 10 percent of your riboflavin (Vitamin B2) and 10 percent of your iron. So while it’s lower in iron and Vitamin C than Vitamineral Green, it provides more evidence of a well-rounded product.

In addition, it tells you how many probiotics it has — 1.2 billion. That’s not a lot, but it tells you what’s in it.

Because of its transparency and it’s broader array of ingredients, Perfect Food comes out on top for benefits.

It’s true that a lot of folks prioritize spirulina in their greens powders, so if you’re looking for algae or you’re looking for unusual herbal medicine ingredients, Vitamineral Green might be the best pick for you.

But for the general population that wants a lot of fruits, veggies, probiotics, and enzymes from their superfood greens powder, Perfect Food makes more sense — and it’s a lot cheaper, too.
