Algae has caused mass extinction, fatal pooping, dead zones, and hurt companies that depend on drinkable water, but not all algae are bad!

What The Crap Is Algae Anyway?:

+ + + + + + + +

Are all algal blooms harmful?:

“Less than one percent of algal blooms actually produce toxins. Harmful algal blooms are blooms of species of algae that can have negative impacts on humans, marine and freshwater environments, and coastal economies.”

How Plants Helped Make the Earth Unique:

“Plants have helped shape our planet. New research indicates the first arrivals on land not only helped alter nutrient cycles, but contributed to one of Earth’s mass extinctions. And as plants evolved, so did rivers, creating more habitats for green things and the animals that followed.”

Ordovician-Silurian mass extinction:

“The third largest extinction in Earth’s history, the Ordovician-Silurian mass extinction had two peak dying times separated by hundreds of thousands of years. During the Ordovician, most life was in the sea, so it was sea creatures such as trilobites, brachiopods and graptolites that were”

What are harmful algae?:

“Phytoplankton blooms, micro-algal blooms, toxic algae, red tides, or harmful algae, are all terms for naturally occurring phenomena. About 300 hundred species of micro algae are reported at times to form mass occurrence, so called blooms.”

Algal bloom:

“An algal bloom or marine bloom or water bloom is a rapid increase in the population of algae in an aquatic system. Algal blooms may occur in freshwater as well as marine environments.”

Scientists link nutrient pollution to coral bleaching:

“Too many nutrients can put corals at risk, a new study shows. Excessive nitrogen in the water affects their ability to cope with rising water temperatures and other environmental pressures, making them vulnerable to harmful bleaching.”

What is coral bleaching?:

“Warmer water temperatures can result in coral bleaching. When water is too warm, corals will expel the algae (zooxanthellae) living in their tissues causing the coral to turn completely white. This is called coral bleaching. When a coral bleaches, it is not dead.”

Overgrowth Of Algae Endangers Coral Ecosystems:

“Overfishing and nitrate pollution can destroy coral reefs by allowing an overgrowth of algae that brings with it unwanted pathogens, chokes off oxygen and disrupts helpful bacteria. These are the findings of a new study out of the Oregon State University, published recently in PLoS One.”

Harmful Algal Blooms:

“Harmful algal blooms are a major environmental problem in all 50 states. Known as red tides, blue-green algae or cyanobacteria, harmful algal blooms have severe impacts on human health, aquatic ecosystems and the economy.”

The Problem:

“Nutrient pollution is one of America’s most widespread, costly and challenging environmental problems, and is caused by excess nitrogen and phosphorus in the air and water.”

How to Grow Chlorella for a Food Supplement | How To Grow Cholera

Growing your own stock of chlorella algae only requires some basic equipment that includes a simple glass aquarium (that should be placed at a window for maximum sunlight exposure), filtered or purified water, and plant nutrients.

The cultivation of chlorella has the longest tradition in Asiatic countries, especially Japan, where it has been used for human nutrition, pharmaceutics and cosmetics in an annual amount of several thousands of tones. The use has lately involved the so-called aquacultures – in which the alga is a valuable component of the food chain in directed intensive-breeding colonies for delicate fish and shrimp species.

Chlorella is easy to find and to select the starter strain because it grows in almost any pond or lake worldwide. Alternatively, just buy the starter strain from a local university or biology lab.

Algae May Hold Key to Origin of the Sexes:

“A tiny, unassuming little alga may hold the secret to how the sexes evolved.A single gene that determines male or female sex in multicellular algae evolved from a more primitive version found in a single-celled ancestor that doesn’t have sexes, according to a new study.”

THE ORIGIN OF LAND PLANTS:

“Standard textbooks on botany and phycology acknowledge a world view in which the green algae as a whole are no longer monophyletic to the exclusion of land plants (embryophytes; Raven et al., 1999?; Graham and Wilcox, 2000a?; Graham et al., 2002?; Judd et al., 2002?).”

All Land Plants Evolved From Single Type of Algae, Scientists Say:

“The first tentative moves that got life out of the water and onto the land eons ago were apparently made by slimy green algae, scientists say, and coming ashore wasn’t easy.”

Timeline of Photosynthesis on Earth:

“Photosynthesis evolved early in Earth’s history. The rapidity of its emergence suggests it was no fluke and could arise on other worlds, too. As organisms released gases that changed the very lighting conditions on which they depended, they had to evolve new colors.”

Polyphyletic:

“adjective
1.developed from more than one ancestral type, as a group of animals.”

Blue-green algae:

“Blue-green algae, also called cyanobacteria, any of a large, heterogeneous group of prokaryotic, principally photosynthetic organisms. Cyanobacteria resemble the eukaryotic algae in many ways, including morphological characteristics and ecological niches, and were at one”

Turbidity:

“Turbidity is a measure of the degree to which the water loses its transparency due to the presence of suspended particulates. The more total suspended solids in the water, the murkier it seems and the higher the turbidity.”

Eukaryote:

“A eukaryote is an organism with a complex cell or cells, in which the genetic material is organized into a membrane-bound nucleus or nuclei.”

What Is Photosynthesis?:

“Photosynthesis is the process used by plants, algae and certain bacteria to harness energy from sunlight into chemical energy.”

Overfishing linked to algal blooms:

“Nitrogenous fertilizers and detergents have long been known to cause algal blooms that block sunlight and strangle ecosystems, but a study now reveals that overfishing of large predatory fish is also playing a key part.”

What Are Algae?:

“Algae are a diverse group of aquatic organisms that have the ability to conduct photosynthesis. Certain algae are familiar to most people; for instance, seaweeds (such as kelp or phytoplankton), pond scum or the algal blooms in lakes.”

The diving pool at the Olympics is closed after turning green. Here’s what happened.:

“On Tuesday, something happened to the diving pool at the Rio Olympics. It turned green. Not just a little green. No. This was full-on lime Jell-O green, close to the color swatch movie set designers turn to when they want to make something look radioactive.”

Algae removal on Orchid pots

So one of the concerns with Seramis is that it can favor apparition of algae, so it was something to observe. As it turns out it is a great medium for algae.. if the orchid already has a small colony to transfer.
▼▼▼More info bellow!▼▼▼

For the most part I don’t have many problems, most of my orchids are clean. However most of my orchids did lose their roots in the move, so there was nothing to start a colony with.

The orchids that still had good roots and had some algae on them simply transferred the colony, thus the top of the pots and also the bright side of my clay pots had a nice green mat of algae. Time to remove them!

There are solutions on the market that are currently used in hydroponics, however I don’t consider I have such a big issue.. yet 🙂 so I don’t want to spend money on them just yet, if I have some alternatives at hand.

I used hydrogen peroxide 3% to spray the top of the medium and the algae started to fizz right away. The spray actually displaced the algae immediately. A good rinse and most of the green mat is gone.

The pot was simply rinsed and scrubbed a bit with a sponge and the algae were removed instantly, no real scrubbing actually. Will I have issues again? yep, some algae survived most probably. But removing them is too easy for me to worry about it.

Now the size of the pot, the size of the root systems, how long the pots stay moist, all these factors are not limiting to my algae issues. The seramis is a great place for them to spread, no matter the circumstance. As long as they have light and some moisture they will develop no matter how ‘overpotted’ or ‘underpotted’ orchids are.

US lakes increasingly overcome by toxic algae

Toxic algae blooms have spoiled fishing and swimming season in more than 20 states this summer. Environmentalists say the algae expands so rapidly that a lake can be covered in hours while sickening humans and killing pets exposed to the water. For more on this, RT America’s Anya Parampil is joined by Bev Anderson, environmental scientist with the California Water Resources Control Board.
